The scholarly definition

Kundalini Yoga: A particular form of Tantrik Yoga. Named after the Goddess (Devi) Kundalini (from Sanskrit kuṇḍala, ‘coil’), or that which is coiled—for Her form is that of a coiled sleeping serpent (one of Her names is Bhujangi, ‘the Serpent’; hence ‘the Serpent Power,’ referring to the Supreme Power, the Divine Cosmic Energy in the human body) in the lowest bodily center at the base of the spinal column—by the arousing of which the Yoga is achieved. Some Sanskrit works call it Bhuta-shuddhi, ‘the purification of the elements of the body,’ which takes place upon that event.

In layman’s terms

There lies within your body a tremendous vital force of regeneration. It permeates every cell of your body and was extremely active in the early years of your life. But unless it is periodically stimulated, it gradually goes to sleep as the years go by. You can, however, through you own efforts, awake this dormant vital force once again by methodically manipulating your body, breath and attention, in such a manner that all body systems are strengthened and revitalized as a result.
